October 2015 exam scores
October 2015 exam scores
Hey everyone!
I created this topic so that once the scores for the 24th October, 2015 exams are out, we could discuss how we all fared.
Btw, does anyone know WHEN the results are gonna be out? Its been 20 days already since the exam.
Thank you! And all the best! <Thumbs up>

Does anyone know when the results would be out? Is there a standard time?

In another thread someone mentioned that they'll be out @12:01am on the 23rdspectral_flow wrote:Does anyone know when the results would be out? Is there a standard time?

Re: October 2015 exam scores
ETS usually reports time in New York time so I'm guessing ESTspectral_flow wrote:Is it 12 AM EST or IST?
Which is in 12 hours!! I can hardly wait.

Waiting...It's 22:37 EST right now. 83 minutes more..
Re: October 2015 exam scores
Yeah I'm sitting with the reporting window open hitting F5. I feel like I need a good score to improve my otherwise weak application.

Any minute now
Re: October 2015 exam scores
Are they still not up? My apologies (as I was one of the ones saying "they'll be up at 12:01am")! It was pretty prompt last month when they went up.Explorer33 wrote:Any minute now
Re: October 2015 exam scores
990! (94%) Beyond stoked. I left ~7 questions blank, so I must have been in the lower 990 range.

950/91%. Good but not great.
I had to log out and log back in to get my score to refresh.

940 (90th percentile) on my 3rd try. Honestly don't know how you 990ers do it.

Congrats to everyone who did well and for those who did fret not there's always next time !
Re: October 2015 exam scores
I got a 990, 94%. I left 3 questions blank, and I realized I solved 4-5 questions wrong. Considering I may have 4-5 careless mistakes, I have around 7-10 wrong answers in addition to 3 blanks.
Congratulations to all test takers

Re: October 2015 exam scores
I got a 960 (91%), which is significantly better than I expected--I was averaging 800ish or lower on the practice tests! I answered 92 questions, no idea how many were incorrect though.
Re: October 2015 exam scores
Yeah that last 50 points is all about getting speed up so you can attempt all the problems and going broad on the trivia studying. Getting from ~700 to ~920 is just studying the available tests and learning the basics. I feel like I could do better if I gave it another shot, but I'm not planning on delaying another year.slowdweller wrote:940 (90th percentile) on my 3rd try. Honestly don't know how you 990ers do it.
Re: October 2015 exam scores
I wanted to say congrats on the score! I remembered seeing your profile and thinking "okay, I want to see her pGRE score" because you did really well on the General GRE and have a really strong profile, and damn, well done!starformationrate wrote:I got a 960 (91%), which is significantly better than I expected--I was averaging 800ish or lower on the practice tests! I'm glad you're in astro, since I'm in HEP-ex
Re: October 2015 exam scores
Got 990/94%.
Up from my previous year's 780/67%.
Please don't let a less than expected PGRE score dampen your confidence. If you feel that your application is weak and want to get into a US grad school, apply this year. If you don't get into any place, work for an year from now and reapply next year. This is what I did. I didn't get in anywhere last year (applied to 15 places). Worked for an year on various projects, practiced PGRE sample papers with critical analysis and it fortunately paid off. I am reapplying this year.
So, keep moving ahead. You can do it!
To everyone else, who got their coveted PGRE score, congratulations!

I attempted 99 problems this time around, but unfortunately made a lot of stupid f*cking errors . Oh well, at least I'm in the 90s now.MattM wrote:Yeah that last 50 points is all about getting speed up so you can attempt all the problems and going broad on the trivia studying. @slowdweller I could be wrong but maybe you are reading to much into your Physics GRE Score. 940 is a fabulous score on its own. Schools take into account a lot of other criteria than just PGRE scores like LORS , SOP and prior research experience. As far as the PGRE goes I would put a tick mark to my requirements if I were you and focus on other areas. Re: October 2015 exam scores
You're partially correct. I'm sure no school will reject me on the basis of a 940. However I'm a bit disappointed since I was aiming to get close to 990. I wanted to leave no room as hep-th is really competitive at the top schools and that's what I was aiming for. Still it's a 40 point improvement from what I had last year, so I'll take it!Explorer33 wrote:

Another thing that possibly skews my perception is that I've been spending a lot of speaking to (current and previous) internationals applicants with 990s. I guess it's more important for them, but as a domestic applicant I hope 940 is enough!

Re: October 2015 exam scores
Congrats everyone! I got 770 (65th Percentile). I have mixed feelings about it as I got 580 on the last practice test I did 2 days before the exam (I think adrenaline takes part of the credit for the 200 point push), but I still wished it would have been better. I hope it's still good enough to do astrophysics with an otherwise strong application, apparently it's higher than the Caltech Astronomy average.

Re: October 2015 exam scores
Oh my gosh, thanks! I was so incredibly surprised, as I fully expected to get somewhere in the 700s, maybe 800s if I got lucky. If anyone in the future reads this, definitely consider using "Conquering the Physics GRE"! 10/10 would recommend.cwr wrote:I wanted to say congrats on the score! Also, I remember looking at your profile like "holy ***, this guy is really good"! I did actually think about HEP-ex but decided against it after working at CERN, haha. Best of luck to you!
Re: October 2015 exam scores
Just got an 890 after scoring a 670 on the September test! Beyond stoked.
Can anyone tell me what tier of schools this puts me in? (Roughly, of course. I know other factors contribute heavily.)
