12 bucks is a lot of money. I'd also have to put up with international calling rates. Guess I'll just wait.

Do post your scores here.

Just called in and I got a 960 (92%). Obviously I was crossing my fingers for a 990, but what I got is definitely good enough!

You think the raw score cutoff for 990 is over 90?

Hello,

I am an international student and I got 670 (49%). I don't intend to apply to a Top 10 university. Do you think this score is too low for applying for a PhD in Astronomy?

I have no clue. I got around the same score on the 2008 practice exam so I think that they are similar.

I tried calling twice and each time the automated machine reported my general GRE scire and hung up on me when I punched 9 for requesting scores for other tests taken in Nov. Lost 24 bucks and still dont know my PGRE score :( not sure what i am doing wrong.

Yeah. I just have one registration number and the automated machine reported my general GRE score accurately.

You should have a different registration number for each test ... the registration number that shows up online when you try to view your scores is for latest test you took. Though if the you took the general before the subject then I'm stumped.

In any case, I think you should just wait until tomorrow to view your score online instead of spending any more money!

Thanks Tom! I did not know we had different registration number for each test and we see the latest one online. I did give my general GRE after the subject test so what you said makes sense. I was just getting anxious to know my score but I think I'll wait rather than giving any more money to ETS :)

I don't know; ... one thing I do know is that there are factors outside of the physics gre when it comes to admission...and real ability. I took the physics gre a few years ago beacause it was an exit requirement for my master's degree. I didn't study because I only needed to score above, I believe, the 25th percentile, and the test seemed like a stupid distraction from my academic work. Now, I took it again this year because I am interested in going back to get my Ph.D, and want a good score. The funny thing about that test is that the best source for answering most of the questions on was my freshman level physics book. I have a master's in physics and still can't move quickly enough to get through alot of questions on that test ...just not how I'm geared. And... most of the problems you work on in grad-school are not solvable in less than 2 minutes. That test pisses me off in a way. Personally, I am conficted with it as a measure of skill in physics. But I am not on the admissions committees.

I got raw scores from my PGRE in 2009, but not in 2011.

I got about the same PGRE scores as you (640 and 690) and I still got into 2/5 top 10 astronomy programs that required the PGRE score. I don't think the PGRE score itself will disqualify you for any program. By the way, U. Washington at Seattle's astro program lists a cutoff score of 500/800 (that is, the trend seems to be that astro programs do not worry about PGRE scores as much as Physics programs).

$12 !!! *** ETS, damn. I am broke from just applying to grad schools, nevermind future debt. Anything for education, I guess :/

I am NOT paying $12 to get shitty news, but waiting till after the first app deadlines could be a problem

The scores are online tomorrow, so all you have to do is wait a few hours to get them for free (they are usually posted in the very early morning hours I've heard).

870 (83%) - +170 (+27%) from last time, so I can say that studying really does help. A little disappointing given how much effort I put in, but that's alright I'm happy to be done!

Got mine, 650/44th percentile. Slightly better than expected, I never did this well on practice exams. Still my general scores were so bad that it seems I am out of the game, can't retake it as I took it in December.

I'm an international student. I got 710/58%. I don't want to apply for top 80 university. with this score and with GPA 12.24/20(Undergrad) and 16.2/20(MS), do I have any chance?

Got a 740 (63%), meh.

Surprisngly, I hit in the high 800s on the 2008 exam when I timed myself. It was a real pleasure to see 6-7 circuit problems on the new exam and only 1-2 on the 2008 exam. I didn't study much about circuits, as a result of the frequency of those type of questions that appeared on previous exams. ETS is getting lazy.

I completely agree with others that have posted here. The PGRE isn't the greatest measure of your aptitude in physics. I think it is an even poorer measure of your ability to succeed in a graduate program.

I spent too much time on older exams, and not enough on the 2008 exam. The exam is practically identical to the 2008 exam. Advice for others: structure your study plan around the 2008 exam.

It is frustrating. I've been a university and self-appointed tutor in physics for a cumulative total of 4 years and have a solid physics GPA. I know the material. I just have trouble working under such a restrictive time limit. When I self-study, mostly for pleasure, I like to take my time. When I solve physics problems, I don't rush myself. I fear that pattern of study has worked its way into how I approach problem solving, which is obviously incompatible with how the PGRE is.

Fortunately, the PGRE isn't the end all be all. A lower PGRE can be overshadowed by stronger parts of your application. It is discouraging. It will even make you feel incompetent. But keep your chin up. It was one test on one day. Make sure to emphasize your research experience and GPA to demonstrate your literacy in physics. It sucks, but you can always retake the exam if things don't work out with programs this cycle, which is what I plan to do if things go south.

I got a dismal 640 (42%) :( an improvement over 560 (23%) from oct 2012 but still dismal.... with the preparation and scores in practise tests was hoping to score upwards of 800 :!:

Not really sure if I should apply this year... I am an international male with no background in Physics (2004 Electronics Engineering graduate and 2009 MBA Finance) and would like to pursue a PhD in hep experimental or cosmology.... was hoping a strong PGRE would help my lack of background but .....

From the Princeton admissions page:
We require GRE tests (including the Advanced Physics Test), and we pay attention to GRE scores. We do not have a minimum GRE score for admission, but we find that almost all of the students admitted to our program have scored highly on the GRE Physics exam. Performing well on the physics GRE requires putting some time into it, an investment that reveals discipline and commitment, which are both good indicators of future success.
So nobody is necessarily saying that the physics GRE is the greatest way to determine your innate physics ability, but admissions committees know that we know that it's important, and thus they expect us to be able to do well on it if required, whatever that may entail.

I'm not trying to put down anyone, nor am I saying that a poor score will bar you from being admitted, but in my opinion the physics GRE is a useful tool for evaluating an applicant alongside GPA, recommendations, statement of purpose, etc.

Gotta agree with Tom, the physics GRE isn't perfect obviously but it's a better indicator than a lot of things and at the end of the day the admissions committees have to decide somehow.

@Tom, I agree with you that PGRE is not the single greatest factor determining the admission or success in graduate school. I was merely implying that since I do not have the backround in Physics, apart from having a compelling SOP, good recos and good GPA, a decent PGRE would add weight to my story/application.

Also, since I went through the pain of writing SOPs/personal statements, filling out the application, hunting down my undergrad professors and requesting recommendations, I might actually end up applying despite the pathetic PGRE :)

Cheers!!

(I am an international student and $150 is quite large amount of money for me)

810, 75%

I hoped to get 86% at least. :(

Yes, my score increased from the time when I take my first PGRE test. But it was THIRD time.

I started to think that I am not talented to Physics.

Although many people said PGRE is not perfect indicator to measure someones innate Physics ability. However, it also has consistency that PGRE is somewhat reliant indicator for those admission committees everywhere.

After all, I love Physics and I want to study Physics though I was not talented enough.

So I just decided to take my 4th PGRE test and registered.

OK, Anyway, take my money ET$ :D

When you say you have no physics background, do just mean you have no formal experience or do you mean none at all? If that's the case it might be best to wait until you can get a solid foundation of Mechanics, E&M, and Quantum, as that would most likely be necessary for you to both be accepted into a program an to succeed in it.

Disclaimer: I'm an undergraduate who has no 1st hand experience in this matter yet so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Is your score improving each time? Did you study for the test the same way each time?

I ask because it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking "If I hadn't made those few dumb mistakes I would have gotten a much better score, I know that won't happen next time." The problem is that you're always going to make a few dumb mistakes, so to improve your score you have to fundamentally increase either your knowledge of physics or your multiple choice test taking ability. This obviously can be done, but you have to study in a way that is different from what you did previously to make that happen.

The last academic physics courses I took were about a decade ago and that too a just a couple of classes that we had as a part of Engineering coursework. I have not been in touch with physics since then. I did write to a couple of schools that I wish to apply to and they said that, if admitted, I will have to take some pre-requisite coursework to make up for the lack of background. Since I work in Finance, I would need to enroll in weekend/night classes if I need to brush up on my high school/undergrad physics coursework. Having said that, The PGRE material is not too difficult and I was hoping for a much better GRE score based on my practise tests and the preparation I put in. I struggled a bit with the QM formalisms et all but Griffith was helpful. I am sure I made those dumb mistakes you were talking about :D

Anyway, I guess I will apply this year and in case I do not get an admit (I really hope I do, I am quite old already ;) (relatively speaking)), I shall enroll in physics course work to better equip myself for next year. Fingers Crossed!!

I can't answer for jona... But I found out why MY scores are not being released yet. As tempted as I am to publically rip ETS to sh** here, I will attempt to not let the quality of my day be compromised today, already spent yesterday being angry. Gotta keep my head up today. Must not let anger obsure my good personal qualities and goals today, unless anger can be a good personal quality, hmmmm......probably not a 'goal' though...will try to be my good self, who cares about ETS anyway, bunch of gravy-train riding.... whoops close one.

Do post here if you find out why some scores aren't available yet.
I called up - apparently ETS just sort of release them after the date quoted, whenever they get around to it (usually within two weeks). Oh america, where has privatisation led you.. ETS clearly have 12 employees and run out of a basement in detroit.

But that is strange considering other people who sat the test on the same date can access their scores already. Could it be that only international students can't access it atm? Or perhaps people who sat the test in particular countries?

I don't think so. But people who sat at particular centres haven't got their score. I know people who took it in Bangalore have got their scores, but not the ones that took it in Delhi.
