Oct. 10, 2010 Physics GRE scores
Has anyone tried to get their score by phone yet? I thought I might be able to find out my score before the November test.

Do you want me to make a heart attack?! It's 2009!
As far as I know the scores are going to be available by phone only beginning with nov 9...

Re: Oct. 10, 2010 Physics GRE scores
I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that I've tried calling already! They aren't up yet.
For the April exam they scores were available by phone a couple of days before the date they gave, I'm hoping it will be the same for this one!

notnaps,
Did you have to pay $12 when you called, or do they only charge for phone scores if you can actually get them?
Also, sorry about the date of the thread title; I am obviously confused about numbers.

Re: Oct. 10, 2010 Physics GRE scores
You only have to pay when you get them. When they're available, you'll hear "The fee for this service is $12" and be asked to type your credit card number... instead of "We located your record for this test... the scores are not available."
They're usually available before the date listed on the ETS website. For us, it was exactly 4 weeks after, which was the same day as the November test. So unfortunately, it's unlikely anyone can use their October scores to decide whether to take the November test.

700 -- 54%. Worse than last time

Re: Oct. 10, 2010 Physics GRE scores
My score is 830---77%
While this score is certainly not "out of the park" I am very satisfied with this score. I am just happy to be 800+.

Someone told me that the actual score on the mailed report could be different. Has anyone had this happen to him? I am not talking about the percentile, but actual increase or decrease of the scaled score?

I can pretty well imagine what will be my condition in early december, when it will be my turn to call them up..betelgeuse1 wrote:I don't have the courage! Help! I cannot pick the phone!
Re: Oct. 10, 2010 Physics GRE scores
Its just like ripping off a bandaid, just do it! Or rather, paying someone else $12 dollars to rip off a bandaid that they put there in the first place!betelgeuse1 wrote:I don't have the courage! Help! I cannot pick the phone!
Re: Oct. 10, 2010 Physics GRE scores
I know what you all mean. My heart was pounding when I called to get my score.
Re: Oct. 10, 2010 Physics GRE scores
860 81% ...... I left so many questions unanswered and thought it might be in the 700s, so better than expected I guess.
Still, it could be a death sentence for an international applicant......

Re: Oct. 10, 2010 Physics GRE scores
@shimpeit: I hope it is not, as I got the same score, and I am
international too. I don't know, maybe different (top) schools
weigh the PGRE in different ways.

I just heard a rumor from a reliable source (professor who hears all of these things) that the Oct GRE was "compromised". Anyone have more info on this?
Not that it matters to me-- I got this over with 2 years ago :p

I haven't heard that and I'm actually kind of curious what "compromised" would mean and what they would do about something like that.astrophysicist2b wrote:I just heard a rumor from a reliable source (professor who hears all of these things) that the Oct GRE was "compromised". I didn't find any information on the web about the GRE being compromised. (I suppose that if the physics GRE were so we wouldn't have gotten scores.)
Did find that Pakistan is talking about requiring PhD students to pass GRE to get degree:

I did mean this exam specifically, and I assume it's hush-hush at this time- I'll of course update if I find out more

Re: Oct. 10, 2010 Physics GRE scores
i have a hope in hell to improve upon my score on the 14th - havent been studying properly. Could have studied seriously if i had my scores instantly or at least in 14 days.
BTW, is the april test way way too late for the august intake??

Here's the official word on the GREs being compromised:
http://www.ets.org/s/china/index.html
Apparently they administered an old test in China... I don't know how that affects everyone else (presumably percentiles would be skewed low if they included them initially in the scoring, or high if they were excluded).
Edit-- this was apparently for the General test administered in October in China, not the Physics one

What's your opinion on whether this will effect the other applicants (e.g. us) positively by removing a part of the competition? Or will most of the unfortunate people take the make-up test approximately as well, and the schools be flexible enough to allow those late scores to count? Or have all the serious applicants taken the test earlier (due to 3rd of December being already late to many programs)? And does the theory of short circuit microscopic have anything to say to the matter?

Re: Oct. 10, 2010 Physics GRE scores
If anything, it would only affect scores after the date, although, I highly doubt this one set of tests is enough to make a change in the whole systems averaging. Now if it was the Physics test... that might screw some things up.schwiss wrote:What's your opinion on whether this will effect the other applicants (e.g. us) positively by removing a part of the competition? Percentile takes into account a much larger sample space(5years maybe?)
Most Chinese students who are going to US have done GRE general last Oct. or this Jun.
ETS already promised they would speed up the marking process for those who are retaking.
