What can I do with a double major?

Hello,

I intend on getting a double major in physics and applied math. Assuming that I have top notch grades and test scores could I get into a masters program like mechanical engineering or electrical engineering? Also would it be funded?

Thank you!

Hi,

A double major in physics and applied math, assuming you have top grades and test scores (defined as, say >3.85 GPA, >90% percentile for general GRE quantitative and >80% percentile for PGRE) will EASILY get you into a masters program for mechanical or electrical engineering, at least according to the experience of my friends. However, in the majority of cases it will NOT be funded, especially if you are an international student.

However, if your grades and test scores are top notch, and you have a double BS in physics and applied math, there is no reason you shouldn't be applying to funded PhD programs in mechanical or electrical engineering, and then have both an MS and a BS paid for entirely.

I second this. For some reason, terminal masters programs are unfunded, while if you're enrolled in a PhD program they'll pay you through your masters, at which point nothing stops you from leaving the program other than your love for the subject.
