This reminds me of LAN parties.

It may be also noteworthy to add that he has another article called "HOWTO: Get into grad school for science, engineering, math and computer science"

I don't agree with a lot of what he says (like the fact that GPA doesn't matter when we know that in many instances it does) but it's still potentially useful for some students who have no idea what a graduate school looks for in a student.
