1 is not bad but it's really all about the prelude to 6! Pablo Casals plays my favorite version but it's not on youtube. This will have to suffice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9fpmgpNDwc Playing starts at 1:10.

Anyway, if you like the suites you should definitely get the recording of Pablo Casals playing them if you don't already have it. His recordings made them famous.
God I always feel light-headed after listening to the cello :)

I guess I'm more accustomed to Yo-Yo Ma's style... haven't really looked much into Pablo Casals. I've really been into the cello and violin for only a year now... I'll have to listen to him more :D

Some more of Yo-Yo Ma

I had found the first one and thought the video was completely ridiculous! I like the playing, but still not as much as Casals'. When people criticize Yo-Yo Ma they usually accuse him of being too precise and too technically adept. They say it sounds like they are listening to a computer and that the music looses some of its humanness and some of its raw power. I'm not sure if I agree but I can see where they are coming from.

The Casals recordings are old -- from the early 1900's I think -- and you can hear the artifacts of an old recording. However, fan's of Bach's Cello Suite's (some of the greatest music in all of history, IMO), almost universally agree that Casals' recordings should be in your collection. But of course, ultimately it just comes down to your personal taste and you might find that Casals is simply not to yours :)

One of my private instructors, he taught me for about 7 years, was from Beijing and frequently gave me recordings of music from a lot of chinese composers. This wouldn't have been so bad except most of it was written for strings which had the negative effect of making me jealous of, among other instrumentalists, the cello players.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEqUfKzJGuQ

and it certainly didn't help that most of my other favorite composers, such as Arvo Part, also insisted on writing almost exclusively for strings

As to my actual musical tastes, I suppose I could fairly easily break my collection into things other people may enjoy and those that will almost certainly not win over most listeners.

The King's Singers ruined Bach for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXhAz0DOpMU

Not because they mimic his style but because I can't hear the name Bach without hearing them singing his name. Although, on the other hand, the King's Singers do an amazing rendition of Black Bird and Danny Boy so it's hard to stay mad at them.

I'm not familiar with Nosaj Thing but I found 1685/Bach right up my alley. I'll have to take a closer look at the rest of his albums.

On your initial comment about the artists being inaccessible, was this based on the samples I provided or other experiences with their music? If it's based on the samples I'd feel obligated to admit that I cherry picked a number of their more tame and popular songs. If it is based off of other experiences then I'm pleasantly surprised to find that my musical taste isn't completely intolerable to the rest of the world.

For example, these are songs I love that are definitely less accessible than the ones I previously cited,

Venetian Snares - Sajtban: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1cb-qbC-dI
Autechre - V-Proc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUiLknTgEWM
Apparat - Granular Bastard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVdKacGcRQs
Aphex Twin - Mt. Saint Michel + Saint. Michels Mount: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1ZGIrNf71Q
Squarepusher - The Modern Bass Guitar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os_Jt_k-E-U
Mouse on Mars - Duul: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0tkKZ0nAUo
Boards of Canada - Macquaire Ridge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKSM-jyQh3o

Ok so the BOC song isn't inaccessible but the video is just so nice.

Man, negru is trollin' all up in this thread.

As for music: An album doesn't have to tell a story in order for it to be taken as a complete piece of art. See, for example, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel or Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? by of Montreal.

I'm not seeing a lot of overlap between my favorite artists and the others mentioned here, although I of course enjoy Daft Punk, the Beastie Boys, and to a lesser extent Ratatat and some others. According to last.fm, the artists I have listened to the most overall since March 2007 are:

1 Deerhoof 1,765
2 Los Campesinos! 1,591
3 of Montreal 1,446
4 The Decemberists 1,395
5 The Beatles 1,366
6 Death Cab for Cutie 913
7 Modest Mouse 897
8 Neutral Milk Hotel 863
9 Pavement 744
9 The Hood Internet 744
11 Andrew Lloyd Webber 740

Not quite as much overlap as grae but we have at least a few similarities. Especially Krush, who is severely underrated in my opinion.

Hm... I wouldn't call autechre, squarepusher, BoC, or aphex twin inaccessible music. Love Rjd2 :)

I've been listening to the album Drift by Nosaj Thing a lot lately. You might like it:

Edit: ok maybe I take it back for autechre :)
You'll be happy to know that Nosaj Thing has now made it into the rounds of my Pandora playlist.

Krush is pretty underrated, but I think that's mostly because he's from Japan. Come hang out in Hawaii and we can have a dance party.

I started listening to Ratatat a few months ago. I really like them like I thought I would, but I definitely gotta be in the right mood to listen.
I like this one the best so far, but the video hypnotizes me and I start making animal noises: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW8VmSfYLAU

It might not be for every listener of Daft Punk, but if you think you'd like Daft Punk doing mash-ups of their own songs you should really check out Alive 2007:

Ratatat is coming to SLC and I've already got my tickets. To say that I'm stoked would be an understatement.

I think their song 'Germany to Germany' is probably my favorite song they've ever done although I'm not sure that I could ever really explain why.

I was lucky enough to be at one of the concerts during the Alive tour. It was the most incredible show I've ever seen; a unique experience that will be difficult to top for the remainder of my concert-going life. I'm hoping that they go on tour again soon.

I must say it is quite rare that I find Blood Brothers fans around anymore. It's quite unfortunate the band has moved on. They were quite a piece together.

HappyQuark wrote:My favorite composer, by miles, is Arvo Pärt. I struggled to pick a single example of his music but I settled on "Summa for Strings".

If you are craving more, some other fantastic works of his are "Tabula Rasa", Cantus In Memoriam "Benjamin Britten" (a memoriam for the famous British modern composer), his many variations of "Fratres" but in particular his "Fratres for 8 Cellos" or "Spiegel im Spiegel".

yeah mine too...:)

I think those who love classical music will love Josh Groban's songs.
